Sierra Leone Heightens Vigilance as Guinea Confirms First Mpox Case

Claim: Guinea records first positive Mpox case.

Verdict: TRUE

Context: Amid rising concerns over the spread of Mpox in West Africa, the confirmation of a case in Guinea has prompted neighbouring Sierra Leone to intensify its public health measures. The case, involving a young girl from Guinea's Macenta prefecture, marks the first confirmed instance of the virus in the country. Prior to this, Guinea had reported several suspected cases, which heightened regional health surveillance efforts.

Evidence: On September 2, 2024, the National Health Security Agency (ANSS) in Guinea confirmed that a 7-year-old girl from the Macenta prefecture tested positive for Mpox. The case was detected three days earlier, following a report of nine suspected cases of the viral disease. This confirmation was further verified by Adama Sadjo Diallo from the Local and Community Development Support Network (RESADEL).

In response to the situation, Harold Thomas, Program Manager for the Health Education Program at Sierra Leone's Ministry of Health, reiterated the country's commitment to preventing the importation of the virus. Thomas confirmed that Sierra Leone remains vigilant, with measures in place to manage any potential cases that might cross the border.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has emphasized the importance of strengthening laboratory capacities, improving case investigation, and ensuring timely reporting to monitor the virus and prevent its spread.

Conclusion: The claim that Guinea has recorded its first positive Mpox case is true.
