Misleading Claims About SABCO Dumping Rotten Sardines Debunked

Claim: SABCO Dumps its Rotten Sardines: A Testament to a Failed Experiment

Verdict: Misleading

Context: A viral social media claim surfaced alleging that SABCO Fishing Company was dumping rotten sardines at the Bomeh dumpsite. The sighting of a truck belonging to SABCO at the site fueled rumours that the company was disposing of rotten sardines, leading to public concern about the quality and safety of SABCO's products.

Evidence: To verify the claim, Sierra Check reached out to SABCO Fishing Company. Zainab Tejan Bangura, the Human Resource Manager of SABCO, clarified that the company was not dumping rotten sardines. Instead, the materials being disposed of were waste byproducts from sardine production, including fish heads, tails and scales.

To further investigate, the Sierra Check team visited the Bomeh dumpsite. They confirmed that the waste material observed was consistent with the byproducts described by SABCO. Additionally, three residents living near the dumpsite, including a regular scavenger, corroborated this finding, confirming that no rotten sardines were disposed of at the site.

Conclusion: The claim that SABCO was dumping rotten sardines at the Bomeh dumpsite is misleading. The evidence clearly shows that the material being disposed of was production waste, not rotten fish.
