Fact Check: Sierra Leone's VAR Claims Found False

Claim: Sierra Leone to become first African country to install VAR system for premier league matches. Already in Sierra Leone set for testing.

Verdict: FALSE

Context: Contrary to the claim, Sierra Leone is not the first African country to install a VAR system for its premier league matches. In fact, Sierra Leone has not officially installed a VAR system. What is currently being tested is a technology aimed at reviewing critical decisions during matches to address issues of mistrust between football organizers and the public.

Evidence: Credible sources within the Sierra Leone Football Association clarified that the technology being tested is not a full-fledged VAR system but rather a tool to review critical decisions leading to a clear and obvious error during matches. AYV, a media organization, approached the football association with the technology, which they claim to have acquired for $30,000. The intention is to use credible individuals who have experience as referees to operate the technology and ensure fair play during matches.

In light of the clarification provided by the football association, it is evident that Sierra Leone is not introducing a VAR system for its premier league matches, but rather exploring technological solutions to address issues of officiating and fairness in football matches.

Conclusion: The claim that Sierra Leone is set to become the first African country to install VAR system for premier league matches is false. While a technology is being tested to review critical decisions during matches, it does not constitute a full VAR system and Sierra Leone is not the first country in Africa to explore such technological solutions for football officiating.
